50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CLUB,

NOVEMBER 2013

with

 SHOW OF HANDS

The Sun Hotel had been our home for 37 of the now 54 years. When  stepped into the ballroom the first time we thought, we can't run a Folk Club in this huge space........... can we?
Gold tickets for this golden anniversary. We had given Steve & Phil their first booking, as a duo. This was the obvious choice for our celebration.
The audience arrive early to get the best positions, but nobody need worry, the superb Bose system is unobtrusive and gives great quality sound throughout the room.
Over the years we have amassed a huge amount of memorabilia, pictures, letters, old club and festival programmes. A lot of these were on display throughout the celebration period. We also diplayed a complete list of all the acts that have played at Hitchin since Maureen has been responsible, when they played and, for the most part, who the support was.

Phil is looking at a rosta poster issued by the Fingamagig agency, run by an up and coming artist called Jasper Carrott!

Just a little relaxation before the off.
All lined up and ready to go, with Isaac Guillory keeping a watchful eye from the backdrop.
First half under way.
Half time interval and time for a photo call with the cake!

Thanks to Greg Covington for the Show of Hands photo montage, and to Maureen for the cake(s).

Time to sign a few CDs at the Show of Hands retail opportunity.
Maureen and her band of helpers serve the cake to a very appreciative audience.
Every good folk night has a raffle. During the preceding week the Philippines had been struck by devastating storms, so we announced that the proceeds of the raffle would be donated to a local relief fund. The audience responded with a new world record Hitchin Folk Club raffle record of £350!  Thank you so much for your generosity.
...........and on to the second half.
......and the last number.
Well, we have a great photographic record of a truly wonderful celebration concert. Phil and Steve have played a major part in the latter half of the Club's history. But so have you, the audience, so we thought it only fitting the you should be part of that record. (Don't know who the bloke is that ran round the room so he could be in all of them!)

Many thanks to Dave Hounam, who provided the majority of the pictures in the 50th Anniversary section.

The end of a great night!

Celebration of Maureen's 50 years running the club.

22nd January, 2017

In January 1967, with very little experience, Maureen took over the club when Roger Pearson, who had started the club some three and a half years earlier, decided he would release the reins. He had moved to Kent some time before, and it was proving unrealistic.

We had to think long and hard as to how to celebrate Maureen’s 50 years of running Hitchin Folk Club.  So we looked back; back to two men who have been playing at Hitchin, between them, for 84 years and yet still sound as good as they ever did, Mike Silver and Johnny Coppin, with an opener from Keith Pearson, the club’s original resident, accompanied by Tim Jellis. There were reams of memorabilia to browse through and cake, there will always be cake!  There was also a special raffle with all the proceeds going PSC liver research. Many of you will know that, if it hadn’t been for the skills of the surgeons at Royal Free Hospital effecting two liver transplants, Maureen wouldn’t have been there to celebrate 50 years.  Oh yes, and as a final nod to the past, we decided to charge 1967 prices (not the beer!), so tickets were 5/- members and 6/- non-members. (25p and 30p). YouTube

TOUR OF THE CLUB

Our new venue from January 2020, the brand new Pavilion complex of Hitchin Cricket Club, in Lucas Lane, top of Gaping Lane.

First night at The Cricket Club, a double header with Emily Slade and Liz Simcock, with a near capacity audience to welcome us to our new home.

The seating capacity of the room is 140, similar to the Sun Ballroom. It has a built in, high spec KV2 PA system, so we won't miss the Bose too much!

The view from the pitch.  The function room is on the upper floor.

The Pavilion has its own large car park, for more than 80 vehicles.

The room has its own bar, stocked with an excellent range of Real Ales!

All set up and ready to go

Packed night

5 minutes to second half

This is a superb function room, suitable for weddings, parties, dances, concerts and conferences, etc.

It is fully air conditioned and has a kitchen and lounge bar attached.

If you are interested in hiring, please contact the Cricket Club.
